Peru trip part 5-The best part of our trip was visiting Trujillo

We got to Trujillo on Friday night after a very long 8 hour drive. It was an adventure trying to find clean bathrooms along the way and none had toilet paper, good thing we had our own roll. We were very tired by the time we got to Trujillo. In the morning we went to the Cultural Event's dress rehearsal. It was such a beautiful show!!! Elder Uchtdorf stopped by and spoke for a few minutes and then left because he was coming back that night to watch the show.

This is Erlinda Polo, she was sitting a few rows ahead of us and when she saw us she came over and first told another returned missionary friend of Brent that Brent had baptized her. Then she called me over and told me that Brent had baptized her when she was 9 years old. Brent and his companion opened the little town of Viru, when there was only one sister who was a member of the church. Brent and his companion Elder Mendoza, taught Erlinda and her family.

Sister missionaries who were watching  the cultural event rehearsal.  I was telling them that my husband had served in Trujillo 30 years ago and that he had served in Viru and was one of the first missionaries in Viru. The sister in the khaki skirt and peach top said "Elder Hanson?". Hahaha I thought it was funny that she knew who Brent was! She was serving in Viru and the sisters that Brent had baptized were telling everyone in Viru that Elder Hanson was coming. This sister missionary was so funny, after she met Brent she asked to have her picture taken with him. He was such a celebrity. I can't even begin to describe all the emotions that we felt while we were in Trujillo, visiting and meeting people. During the cultural event and the group of kids of about 150, of the Viru area came out Brent was crying which made me cry.  He just thought of how it was only 1 sister when he got there and now there were so many members!! What a blessing that these early members had stayed so strong and active in the church!! What a blessing for Brent and all the missionaries that served in Viru! The Peruvian people are one of the nicest and kindest people I know.
While we waited for a bus that would take us to lunch and then to visit some ruins around Trujillo we took some pictures outside the Gran Chimu colosseum.

A bus full of young performers waving to us good bye.
After the rehearsal we went to have lunch with the returned missionaries at a nice restaurant on the Huanchaco beach near Trujillo.

After lunch we all went and visited this very cool ruin outside of Trujillo called La huaca de la luna. Huaca means sacred place like temple or shrine and luna means moon. Temple of the moon. This ruin is very impressive.

Behind us is the huaca del sol or temple of the sun, just above Brent's shoulder but that one was not opened to the public. It was looted by Spanish conquistadors in the 17th century while the huaca de la luna was relatively untouched.

Then that night we went to the Cultural event. Again President Uchtdorf addressed the youth. It was too dark for pictures but I got this one.
