Being Boricua is a great blessing. Since I was a little girl, my mother and grandmother instilled in me
the respect and fear of God. With fear I do not mean that it is a God that is scary on the contrary, a God that loves us and that we owe him reverence, respect and adoration. One of the ways in which I learned about God from my mother and grandmother, just as many puertorricans learned, "the blessing" (la bendicion). There was never a lack of "blessing" in our home. Every time one of us left or arrived, we asked our mom and dad for a blessing or depending where we were, our grandparents, aunts and uncles etc. I always remember my mom saying "ask your grandmother for a blessing or ask your aunt for a blessing". They always responded and still respond with "God bless you". At that moment you feel God's love for you and the love of the person giving the blessing. That simple act of giving "the blessing" taught me the love that God has for me and that he blesses me at all times. My dad always told me "God bless you, take care of you, protect you and make you a saint", As a child, every time they gave me "the blessing" I felt like a layer of protection covered me and I knew that God was with me taking care of me. That feeling of protection has lasted with me my whole life. I thank God for being born puertorrican and for that beautiful custom of "the blessing". Not all countries do that, but I was born on that beautiful island where "the blessing" is always given. God bless you always!
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ.
