Maria's talk in church at the Windy Ridge Ward (Spanish) June 14, 2025
Buenas tardes hermanos y hermanas.
Good afternoon, brothers and sisters. I am grateful for this opportunity to address you today.
In Exodus 19:5 it says, “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine.”
In this past April's general conference, in his Sunday morning address titled “My Peculiar Treasure,” Elder Alan Walker explained that in this scripture, Jehovah spoke to the prophet Moses on Mount Sinai and declared that His people would be a peculiar treasure to Him if they obeyed His voice and kept His covenant. The pattern that Jesus Christ established is for everyone who desires to be “His treasure.” This pattern has two simple yet very powerful conditions: the first is to obey His voice, and the second is to keep our covenants with Him.
Obeying His voice implies listening to inspiration, studying the scriptures, and following the guidance of modern prophets. On the other hand, keeping our covenants establishes a direct connection with Jesus Christ, strengthening both the individual and the family. In this regard, President Russell M. Nelson taught: “Once you and I have made a covenant with God, our relationship with Him becomes much closer than before the covenant. Now we are bound together. Because of our covenant with God, He will never tire in His efforts to help us, and we will never exhaust His merciful patience with us. Each of us has a special place in God’s heart. He has high hopes for us.”
Let us talk about the first condition: “Obey His voice.” How can we improve our capacity to hear the voice of the Lord? Let us remember that the first words Heavenly Father said to Joseph Smith were: “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” President Nelson told us that in that word, 'Hear Him,' God gives us the pattern or model for success, happiness, and joy in this life. It is not always easy to recognize that the Lord is speaking to us, but we can become more aware of His voice in our lives. As we daily read the words of Jesus Christ in the scriptures, they will tell us how to respond to difficulties we never thought we would face. We can also hear Him in the temple; there we learn how to part the veil and communicate more clearly with heaven. We hear Him when we give heed to the words of the prophet and apostles, who always testify of Him. We can hear Him with greater clarity if we refine our ability to recognize the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. In Doctrine and Covenants section 8, verse 2, it says: “Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.”
Satan wants to pull us away from God. Because of this, we must seek sacred places and moments, creating an orderly, clean, and reverent environment in our daily lives. The voice of God is still and small, and we must draw close to hear it. It is important to dedicate time every day to this purpose; He is willing to reveal His will. We must seek to connect with heaven as constantly as we seek to connect to Wi-Fi. The more we act according to what we receive, the more familiar the voice of God will become to us.
I always remember the first time I heard the voice of the Holy Ghost. I was small, just 9 years old. One day, I left school early and walked to my grandmother's house. When I arrived, she wasn't there, but the door was unlocked. She never did that, so I thought she must be nearby, maybe at the little shop across the street. I went out to the sidewalk, but I was very afraid to cross the street because many cars were always passing by.
As I stood there, not knowing what to do, I heard clearly in my mind, “pray.” It had been barely a year since my family had been baptized into the Church, and this was practically new to me, but I understood the message and offered a prayer for God to help me find my grandmother. After praying, I opened my eyes and looked to the right; I saw the missionaries coming down the street on their bicycles toward where I was standing. They stopped and asked me what I was doing there. When I told them I wanted to find my grandmother, they helped me cross the street and I found her. Thanks to that and other experiences I have had, I know that God speaks to us; He gives us personal inspiration to help us in our lives.
The second condition of the pattern established by Jesus Christ is to “Keep our covenants with Him.” President D. Todd Christofferson has told us that “as we honor our covenants, faith increases—first because the promised fruits of obedience are realized, which confirms our faith; second, because the Spirit communicates God’s approval, and we feel secure in His continued help and blessing; and third, because no matter what happens, we can face life with hope and serenity, knowing that in the end we will succeed because we have God's promise to us personally, by name; and we know He cannot lie.”
My parents were a great example of faith to me. Shortly after our baptism, my dad set a goal to take us to the temple when our one-year anniversary arrived. At that time, the closest temple to Puerto Rico was the one in Washington D.C. My dad had no idea how he was going to pay for such an expensive trip for the whole family, but his faith was unshakable and he would always say: “Somehow, we are going to go.” Completely unexpectedly, my dad received five thousand dollars that the government owed him for his service as an Air Force veteran; money he didn't even know belonged to him or expected to receive. That money was exactly what my dad needed to pay for the trip. Thanks to that miracle of faith, in June 1975, we were able to travel to the Washington D.C. Temple and be sealed as an eternal family. From that experience onward, and despite the fact that there was no temple in Puerto Rico and they were rarely able to attend much during their lives, my parents always kept their recommends current. Their faithfulness taught me the importance of keeping our covenants.
Our Savior is the perfect example of making and keeping promises and covenants. He came to earth with the promise to do the will of the Father, taught the gospel in word and deed, and atoned for our sins so that we can live again. He has honored all His promises.
The Lord is mindful of our weaknesses in this mortal life. He does not ask for immediate perfection; He asks for a sincere heart and a contrite spirit. He asks us to be humble and willing to diligently keep our covenants, even when it requires sacrifice.
Elder Walker tells us that faithfulness to covenants gives us the power to rise above the limitations of this fallen world. Becoming the Lord's treasure is not something that happens by chance; it requires patient effort, faithful perseverance, and sacrifice. We must be willing to lay aside lesser things—habits, aspirations, or comforts that draw our hearts away from Him—so that we can offer ourselves entirely and without reservation. By choosing to follow prophetic counsel, we demonstrate our love for the Lord and show that we value Him above any worldly desire.
In Mosiah chapter 2, verse 41, it says:
“And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that there
It is my testimony that when we are obedient to the voice of the Lord and are faithful and honor our covenants, we will feel His love and guidance in our lives. I know that this is the true church. That Jesus lives and loves us infinitely, and He invites us to follow Him and become like Him so that we can return to His presence.
I say this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
