Something I read online:

This is something I read online and had to put it on my blog:

In Revelation 1:10, John stated that suddenly he heard a great voice speaking to him. Captivated, John quickly turned to see its source. He wrote, “And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; and in the midst of the seven candle- sticks, one like unto the Son of man…” (Revelation 1:12,13).

Notice that John said Jesus was standing “…in the midst of seven golden candlesticks….” Revelation 1:20 reveals what this symbolism was supposed to convey: “…The seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.” According to this verse, the seven golden candlesticks that John saw in verse 12 and 13 specifically represented seven functioning churches that existed in the Roman province of Asia during the time the apostle John was prisoner on the Isle of Patmos. Yet the message Jesus was about to deliver to John not only was intended for these specific congregations, but also to the Church as a whole in every age.

The word “golden” in Revelation 1:12 is the Greek word chrusos. This Greek word was used throughout Scripture and other ancient literature to denote the precious metal gold. It described gold, gold coins, gold jewelry, gold fabric, and other items that were fashioned of pure gold.

In the ancient world, there were two kinds of gold — gold that was absolutely pure and gold that was an alloy, meaning it had been mixed with other metals such as silver. Pure gold was considered to be the highest quality and most desirable form of the metal. Varieties that had been mixed with other metals were considered to be less valuable and of a lower grade. The Greek word chrusos — the same word John used in Revelation 1:12 to describe the “golden candlesticks” — referred to pure gold of the highest quality.

Raw gold is typically discovered encased in rock. Once the gold-bearing rock is removed from the earth, it must be crushed in order for the gold to be extracted. After the rock is crushed, water is forced over the broken fragments to wash away everything except the raw gold itself. With the rubble removed, the gold is exposed and then placed into a fiery furnace. There the blazing hot temperatures melt the gold into liquid form and bring all the impurities hidden in the metal to the surface where they can be scraped off by a refiner who oversees the whole process. The heat is turned up again and again, and with each increase in temperature, more impurities are brought to the surface where they can be scraped away.

If the impurities in the metal are not removed, they will become a defect that decreases the strength of that batch of gold. Intense fire is necessary to remove these impurities, and the refining process requires time, patience, and many degrees of blazing hot temperatures. If the process is carried through to completion, however, the result is a soft, pliable pure gold that a gold worker can beat and shape into an exquisite object. From beginning to end, this is a lengthy, tedious, expensive, and complicated process.

Unlike silver, gold does not tarnish, rust, corrode, or corrupt with time. Gold coins might lie buried in the earth or at the bottom of the sea for hundreds or even thousands of years, but when they are discovered, they appear as brilliant as the day they were lost. Thus, because of its incorruptible nature, pure gold became a symbol of enduring value.

In both Old and New Testament times, there was nothing more valuable than pure gold. Therefore, God’s use of the word “golden” (chrusos) to describe the Church conveys a very important message about what He thinks about the Church of Jesus Christ — and, therefore, what He thinks about you and every one of your brothers and sisters in Christ!

First, because the word chrusos describes gold of the highest purity, we see that the Church is pure gold in the eyes of Jesus Christ! Like a miner who goes deep into the earth to extract rock that contains gold, Jesus stepped into the darkness of sin in the human race to extract the Church from this lost world. The Gospel was preached; the lost were convicted of sin, and the Word of God, like rushing water, poured over the souls of the redeemed to remove rubble, wreckage, and waste from their lives. Since the birth of the Church 2,000 years ago, Jesus, our Great Refiner, has been washing the Body of Christ with His Word and overseeing the purifying and refining of His precious Church

The specific seven churches in the book of Revelation that Jesus referred to had some very serious problems, many of which are the very same problems we see in the Church today. In fact, the book of Revelation tells us:

  • They left their first love (Revelation 2:4).
  • They were spiritually fallen (Revelation 2:5).
  • They had false doctrine (Revelation 2:14 and 2:20).
  • They had the compromise of the Nicolaitans in their midst (Revelation 2:6 and 2:15). (For more information on the Nicolaitans, see page 631 in Sparkling Gems 1.)
  • They had works that were weak and ready to die (Revelation 3:2).
  • They had works that were incomplete (Revelation 3:2).
  • They struggled with staying on fire for the Lord (Revelation 3:15).
  • They were lukewarm (Revelation 3:16).
  • They were strongly rebuked by the Lord (Revelation 3:19).
  • They were told to repent of wrong attitudes and actions (Revelation 2:5; 2:16; 3:3; 3:19).
  • They were far from perfect!

You may feel disheartened by what you see or know about the church where you attend or some of the people who attend with you. Perhaps your emotions are trying to convince you that the situation is hopeless and your church family will never turn around for the better. Or perhaps the devil is attempting to dissuade you from further involvement by whispering negative thoughts in your ear about the sad condition of your church. Although it’s true that there is room for change in any church, you must never forget that Jesus died for His Church and there is nothing in the world more precious to Him than the Body of Christ — including your local congregation. You may see problems, but Jesus sees the Church only as pure gold.

The Church has always had imperfections; this is nothing new, for only God is perfect. When we finally see Jesus face to face, we will be transformed into His image and become just like Him with no imperfections. However, until that time, Jesus will keep working as our Great Refiner — washing us with the water of His Word and putting us through His purification process to make us pliable and usable in His hands! The work of purification and refinement goes on!

Peter was referring to this very same principle when he wrote, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver or gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18,19). This verse emphatically tells us that Jesus gave His own blood to purchase the Church. The Church may still be in the process of purification and refinement, but we must never forget that Jesus gave His life for it. He loves His Church, and we must love it too. To Him, it is pure gold — worth more than anything else in the whole world — and we must also learn to see it as pure gold and precious.

Therefore, whenever you are tempted to be discouraged about the state of the Church at large or about certain things that bother you in your own local church, proclaim to yourself: Regardless of what I see, feel, or know, Jesus died for the Church, and it is golden to Him. Therefore, the Church at large, and my local church in particular, are golden to me — and NOTHING is going to tarnish my view of it!

 Hey all you people

So this week was pretty awesome

But first I wanted to start with a goofy story from last Monday

So basically Tuesday was one of the Hermana's (sisters in the Spanish ward) birthdays and so they wanted to drive our truck for a day. Apparently they think our truck is the coolest thing ever lol, so we got their van. And for the record, I think their van is way cooler than our truck, it drove insanely smooth and it was a hybrid vehicle which was sick

But anyway

We get home and we were calling people from inside the van to set up lessons when my phone died. And my phone has the sim card. So we couldn't call people anymore and we didn't have a thumbtack to switch the sims. Elder Gonzalez left his charger at home so we had to go inside. But we found out we left the keys to the house on the keys to the truck. So we had no way of getting inside and no way of contacting people. We were using my hotspot on my phone when it died so Elder Gonzalez couldn't even call people on Messenger. We spent like a half hour trying to break into our own house lol and it was really cold, in hindsight we should've just waited in the van

Eventually the other companionship in the house got home and let us in so we chillin

Also on Monday one of the bike elders sprained his ankle, so he couldn't ride a bike anymore. On Tuesday we drove them to some parking lot to pick up a car from Elder Peterson (the car guy) so they have a car now, and we got the official okay in person from Elder Peterson to leave our tiwi (the car speed regulator thingy) unplugged because it drains our battery.

I want to reiterate how nice the van was it was so cool

Also because it was one of the Hermana's birthday and we had our ward huddle (we meet with leaders on Tuesday to go over the people we're teaching) she brought a ton of candy and honey barbecue fritos to the meeting and it was so fun lol

Literally nothing happened Wednesday and Thursday out of the ordinary, except now we're calling December The-cember because this isn't just any December it's The-cember to end all cembers

Friday was cool though, we went tracting and ran into this guy who was cursing out Jesus for a second which was a little uhhhh but we still just shared a story from the Bible and then gave him a Book of Mormon and his whole personality just changed and he was like "yeah I'll read it why not" it was absolutely insane I've never seen that before

Also we had a volleyball activity where we invited a bunch of people, but apparently there was a relief society activity in the gym at our building at that time and everyone (the other missionaries) was just like "just cancel the activity" and we were like "no" and we did it anyway at a different building. We still had to go to our building though because we needed a volleyball and our volleyball was stuck, I don't even know how to explain it, there's this overhanging thing in the gym where we hit the volleyball up there like two weeks ago on accident. I'll save you guys the less important details but we accidentally knocked over a table that had been set up for the relief society activity with a pile of chairs that fell over and we had to fix it. But we got the volleyball.

The activity was really good though, we bought Little Caesar's pizza and had a lot of friends come.

Saturday was just lesson after lesson after lesson, it was honestly pretty exhausting, we gave 7 blessings that day too. Then at the end of the day we set up Christmas decorations at home.

Yesterday was also a good day, we had a baptism! Angel's sister Caroline got baptized, and Angel had just gotten the priesthood so he was able to baptize her. We did the baptism at the building that Elder Gonzalez's first ward met at, and I was able to meet a bunch of people he knew because they were just finishing up church.

The baptism was so good that then their other older sister Kimberly (after like an hour long conversation, and calling the mission president for help) accepted an invitation to get baptized too! Her baptism is this Saturday. Then we went to a member's house, and they have a daughter who is her age who told us that Kimberly had called her and she told her she was going to get baptized too. It was so hype

And President said he wanted to be at the baptism.

Also I benched 135 this morning which is a new max

Spiritual Thought:
I was thinking about a story in the Old Testament about when Elijah visited a widow in 1 Kings 17. She was almost out of food and just wanted to make one last meal for her and her son before they died, but Elijah told her to feed him first. She made him food with the last little bit she had and she found that her food never ran out again and they didn't starve.
I love this story because it shows that if we have faith and do what we are asked to do (especially as missionaries) then the Lord will always provide and we will never starve spiritually. Even when it seems like we're giving everything we have, like the widow was, it will be given back to us and then some.

Ok love you guys bye

November 27, 2023 - 14th Email

Hey y'all

This week was kinda crazy, we had a lot going on and probably because of the holiday it was a really slow week for work.

On Tuesday we got the entire zone (even the elders from Barstow) to come down and do a lot of tracting to help a companionship find more people, and it's called a "blitz". It was pretty fun actually.

Honestly after a while you learn to have fun tracting, it's still not very effective but it's getting a lot easier for me, especially when we do it on exchanges and between houses you just get to know each other a lot better.

On Wednesday we had this guy cancel a lesson but we pulled up to his house anyway and he was back home earlier than he expected so we were still able to do the lesson lol

Elder Gonzalez got a haircut, I probably should get one soon too lol

Also on Wednesday a crazy thing happened, we visited a random person who missionaries stopped teaching about a year ago, and it turns out Elder Gonzalez was one of those missionaries, they used to live in Hesperia but moved up here recently, and we're gonna teach them again tomorrow!

Then, of course, Thanksgiving on Thursday! It was pretty fun, played some football with the stake in the morning, had two Thanksgiving dinners, talked to family, and played basketball at the end of the day! It wasn't an official pday so we still had to find stuff to do the other hours but it was a great day.

Friday we did exchanges. I went with Elder Soto. That day we had literally nothing planned. It was so hard, we had our lessons cancel except one at 8 pm so the rest of the day was us just out tracting and finding for like three or four hours. It was fun though.

We're also trying to rebuilt the area, kinda sorta, we have a lot of people in our teaching pool but we don't really know how committed they are.

On Saturday we also did service helping a sister in the Brentwood (English) ward move.

And church on Sunday is always good.

Spiritual thought:

Mormon 9:19-20

19 And if there were miracles wrought then, why has God ceased to be a God of miracles and yet be an unchangeable Being? And behold, I say unto you he changeth not; if so he would cease to be God; and he ceaseth not to be God, and is a God of miracles.

20 And the reason why he ceaseth to do miracles among the children of men is because that they dwindle in unbelief, and depart from the right way, and know not the God in whom they should trust.

I know God is a God of miracles! As long as there's even just one righteous man on the earth miracles will happen. If you look around you can always see small miracles around you, they don't have to be big.

K bye

November 20, 2023 - 13th Email

Hola you guys!

We had Zone Conference this week! We started this thing called "Holy Habits" where we're taking the next month to develop good habits by following the rules exactly. It's a bit more complicated than that but I feel like that's a good enough explanation. It was a really good Zone Conference. I feel like I've been here a long time now because after the last transfer people were moved to other zones around here and I was able to actually recognize people in the 2 other zones that go to Zone Conference with us lol

Also, Angel, who we baptized last month, has a sister who really wants to get baptized now! It's pretty awesome and she's on date for the 3rd of December.

And one of the elders from up in Barstow, who's only in his second transfer like me, got to hang out with us when the ZL's went on exchanges for two nights. That's a long exchange for y'all who don't know, but he was super cool and we got along well

Wednesday we did service at one of the church buildings down in Hesperia, we just did a food drive. I've always loved doing food drives so it's hardly even work to me

But we had to leave a bit early because I had some training zoom meeting, and we were on a zoom call in the car lol

Also also also

It RAINED on Wednesday, pretty hard actually. It was the first rainstorm since I've gotten here. Apparently it rains a little bit more in the winter and honestly I'm super excited since I've missed rain so much.

And we accidentally had a member show up to one of our lessons. Getting friends fellowshipped with members really works! She was just over doing nails with the girls in the family, just because they were friends and we didn't even know she would be there. She shared her testimony on prayer and it was awesome.

Our friend Sergio is literally awesome. He's been coming to church every week, and we invited him to get baptized, but he said he wanted to actually see a baptism first, which is understandable. I think we can put him on a baptismal date really soon.

On Friday we had an epic ward Thanksgiving dinner, really good activity and we got a few friends to come to it.

I've also been driving a lot this week! I drove all day on Friday and Saturday. My mom's probably gonna freak out by me saying this, but I drove on the freeway (on I-15) for the first time on Saturday and immediately was like "I'm staying in the right lane I don't want to drive too fast" and then I realized the right lane forces you to exit the freeway so I got on the wrong exit on the freeway then immediately just got back on lol

On Saturday one of our Traveling AP's came to visit us. AP stands for Assistant to the President and basically his job is to just go around the whole mission and solve problems and check up on companionships. So we were a trio for the day and he just traveled with us. It was basically a normal day but he helped us a lot and at the end of the day before he left he kinda evaluated us and told us what we do well and how we can improve. It was a cool day. We also accidentally left the zone to go to Wendy's but it was okay because we were with someone who could give us permission to do that anyway

Pablo is just this dog we found that walks around our neighborhood. He's somebody's dog but he just roams and Elder Jensen named him Pablo. He's actually the same kind of dog that bit Elder Gonzalez's leg (an American bully) but he's literally the sweetest fattest dog I've ever seen, he's honestly just big and clumsy and likes to be petted. He's probably been mistreated though so that's really sad but he's literally not scary at all

See you guys next week and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hola!

Not a whole lot actually happened this week, for me and Elder Gonzalez at least. Because this week was transfers, so a lot of people got moved to different areas. We were the only companionship in the whole Victorville Zone (that's 8 companionships) that stayed the same. One of the last zone leaders moved to Redlands, someone else went to Rialto, another just next to us in Apple Valley. Gotta get used to new people again lol but it's gonna be this way every transfer so
Also this transfer is apparently only 5 weeks so people who are finishing their missions can get home for Christmas, and then the transfer after that is going to be seven weeks to even it out. So this transfer is going to feel really short and the next one is gonna be super long
Today is gonna be interesting because we have to go down to the Inland Empire for a doctor's appointment for Elder Gonzalez (it's sad it was on a pday)
Yesterday we had a baptism for our friend Juan! He was so ready from the start and he had a huge desire to change his life and it was really awesome to see him make the necessary steps. Unfortunately I still don't have the pictures for the baptism :( otherwise I totally would've posted them
This week just felt super long though overall. Seemed like we had lesson after lesson and by Thursday it felt like we had just gone through a whole week.
Now that we actually have all 8 companionships that our zone normally has I hope it raises morale for everybody and we'll keep getting a lot of work done. There's been really good success up here in the last bit despite the many problems popping up. And my Spanish is getting even better, too.
Oh yeah goofy story from yesterday I went to call a member we were going to have dinner with, I typed the number and everything, and it called a random guy we were kinda sorta teaching and I didn't realize it until I had already asked about if we could go by for dinner and stuff so that was awkward but it led to me inviting him to our Thanksgiving dinner activity! I swear I called the member's number it was so weird

Little spiritual thought from 2 Nephi 26:
"[The Lord God] doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him. Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation."

Whatever God does, it's for our benefit, and everyone is invited to come unto Him.

K bye
Elder Hanson

A cool view when we tracted on Friday and then a sign that says you can turn left, go straight, or turn right from one lane, driving on the Cajon ("down the hill")

Temple work - A wonderful miracle

On Saturday October 28th, when I woke up that morning I checked Facebook. I saw a picture of the marriage record of Benito Pazo and Micaela Cintron. They got married in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. In the record it said the names of the groom, Benito and the bride, Micaela. It also said that Benito came from La Coruña. Spain. Because Pazo is not a common name in Puerto Rico and I know a family who's mom is a Pazo, I messaged their daughter Vidamari Alvarado Pazo. I sent her the copy of the record and asked if she was related to Benito. I didn't expect her to answer me that early because she was in Utah and it was too early to be awake on a Saturday. She replied a few minutes later and said that Benito was her Great-great grandfather and she did not have the name of his parents. She also said that she was getting ready to go to temple that morning and that she had a dream about her mom. In the dream she was at her mother's funeral and that people were missing. She said "and now you send me this". She said "the Spirit of Elijah is strong". She called me on Sunday and I helped her add the names to her familysearch tree. We also added Micaela Cintron's line, which is my line too and much of the research has been done. I told her we were cousins on a few lines. I know Vidmari since she was born. We were in the same Ward growing up. We were always like family. Her dad just recently sold his house. My brother and Brother Alvarado have been in the same ward for almost 50 years, the same ward as my parents'. My mom at one point was Vidmari's Relief Society president. It was a neat miracle. I know that our ancestors are watching us and they want to help us in their temple work. I love genealogy and I love doing the temple work for my ancestors.

Hey all you people

It's pretty crazy how this is the last week before transfers. I'll probably be staying here but Elder Gonzalez might be leaving, but we'll see when we hear the news on Wednesday.

So basically I got my mission president and the zone to call the month Yesvember instead of November so I guess I'm a trendsetter or something

Also my zone is quite literally in shambles for this last week because we have three fewer companionships than normal so we're working extra hard and it's pretty cool to see that we're still getting a lot done.

Last Wednesday was pretty crazy, we had a baptism of these two little girls so that's pretty awesome and stuff but we spent the whole day dealing with preparing for the baptism and we kept having to reprint the baptismal programs because we spelled one of the girl's name wrong two separate times lol

We ended up giving up and only printing the correctly spelled name on a couple programs to give to the bishop and the family because we had wasted so much printer ink

The girls were so sweet though, one of them after being baptized said "the water isn't black!" because she was told by her older sister that she was so bad that the water would turn black from her sins I guess lol

One thing that was hard was we didn't find a lot of new people to teach this week. It was looking pretty bleak but then on Saturday we found two people and then on Sunday we found two people and it was super cool

Also on Saturday morning we took the truck in to get the tire fixed and apparently they had one dude in the shop for 11 different cars to deal with so the guy was like "yeah it'll be like four hours probably but actually doing the job will take like ten minutes" so then like four hours later we get a call from pepboys that they needed to call our car guy in the mission (this old guy named Elder Peterson) to get permission to do the job so we call him and he calls pepboys back and then we were told "you'll get a phone call when it's done" and it's two days later and we still haven't gotten a call back so we're probably gonna stop by to see what's up over there

Oh yeah forgot to mention this it didn't happen to me but on Friday the ZL's were on exchanges with a different companionship on bike and apparently a pug started chasing them and they had to pick it up and find out where it lived lol so they sent a video of them holding a pug while riding a bike and it was absolutely hilarious

Also daylight savings ended and I got a great extra hour of sleep

Apparently that same night there was a search helicopter that hung around our house for like a half hour with searchlights and everything that I slept through but the other elders woke up to see which makes me a smidge sad

We did exchanges on Saturday with the ZLs again so that was cool, Elder Steere and I got to hang out but this time I lead out in my area which was hard but really fun too.

Elder Jensen went with Elder Gonzalez, and they came across an entire town that's totally abandoned. It's right next to the Southern California Logistics Airport and north of the prison. They had stuff I guess in their air conditioning that caused cancer. So everyone just dipped.

One of our friends that was supposed to get baptized yesterday didn't because his family (actually the guy that was supposed to baptize him) went out of town to Mexico yesterday for a doctor's appointment that he never told us about so we had to push it back which kinda sucks but I know he'll still get baptized.

And finally on Sunday Elder Hudson hung out with us all day yesterday. His companion finished his mission actually last Wednesday (in the middle of the transfer, kinda weird) so he's pretty much alone and just hanging out with whatever companionship he can and we have to usually take him to church anyway so we went with him to his ward and then he just tagged along with us all day. He doesn't speak Spanish though so he was just chilling during lessons. It was probably super easy for him since he didn't have to do anything lol

Ok that's everything bye love you all

Elder Hanson
