Ether 1
Bible dictionary: The object of prayer is not to change the will of God but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that God is already willing to grant but are made conditional on our asking for them.
In other words, Prayer is not a negotiation process, it is an alignment process. We place our faith in Jesus Christ and not in a specific outcome.
Ether 1:34-39: The brother of Jared prayed to the Lord. The Lord had compassion for him.
Ether 1:40-43: The Lord tells them he will meet them in the valley and lead them to the choice land.
The Lord doesn't leave us, he guides us and we are given opportunities to learn and grow as he prepares us for what he wants us to do.
The Jaredites had great faith. They did what the Lord told them to do.
The were in the valley for 4 years and the brother of Jared forgot to pray. 'The Lord chastened him for not praying. He repented. They were probably very comfortable in the valley and when things are going great we tend to forget to pray.
Ether 2:16: The Lord told him to "go to work and build"
We need to get out of our comfort zone, we are here to help build the kingdom of God on the earth and to gather Israel on both sides of the veil.
President Nelson said: "The Lord is hastening His work to gather Israel. That gathering is the most important thing taking place on earth today. Nothing else compares in magnitude, nothing else compares in importance, nothing else compares in majesty"
The brother of Jared got to work building the barges. He built them just as the Lord told him to "according to the instructions of the Lord" Ether 2:16. The brother of Jared had a question about how to light the barges and how to have air in the barges. The Lord solved the problem of the air but with the light he let the brother of Jared figure it out.
He went up to the mountain and melted 16 stones out of a rock, he made them transparent like glass. He prayed to the Lord and humbly acknowledges that he has weaknesses and is imperfect and unworthy to be in the presence of God who is holly and dwells in heaven. He also notes that God has given him a commandment "ask and ye shall receive". He showed God the stones and asked God to touch them so that they will shine.
The brother of Jared worked hard to find the stones and presented them to God, the best stones he could find. God touched the stones and they were lit.
In life we go before the Lord and we present Him with our best effort and ask Him to magnify it with His light. It is His light not our light we are shining.
President Ezra Taft Benson said: “Men and women who turn their lives over to God will discover that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can.”
Ether 2: 25
And behold, I prepare you against these things; for ye cannot cross this great deep save I prepare you against the waves of the sea, and the winds which have gone forth, and the floods which shall come. Therefore what will ye that I should prepare for you that ye may have light when ye are swallowed up in the depths of the sea?
We are dependent on the Lord. We were prepared before this life and He continues to prepare us in this life for those things that lie ahead.
Ether 6:8
And it came to pass that the wind did never cease to blow towards the promised land while they were upon the waters; and thus they were driven forth before the wind.
The Jaredites were obedient and had faith in the Lord. It could not have been easy to travel in the barges. Are we still obedient and faithful when all around us seems to be going wrong and we are faced with trials and difficulties?
Ether 6:6-7
And it came to pass that they were many times buried in the depths of the sea, because of the mountain waves which broke upon them, and also the great and terrible tempests which were caused by the fierceness of the wind.
And it came to pass that when they were buried in the deep there was no water that could hurt them, their vessels being tight like unto a dish, and also they were tight like unto the ark of Noah; therefore when they were encompassed about by many waters they did cry unto the Lord, and he did bring them forth again upon the top of the waters.
Are we humble and prayerful to God when are feeling the storms of life and always?
Ether 6:11-12
And thus they were driven forth, three hundred and forty and four days upon the water.
And they did land upon the shore of the promised land. And when they had set their feet upon the shores of the promised land they bowed themselves down upon the face of the land, and did humble themselves before the Lord, and did shed tears of joy before the Lord, because of the multitude of his tender mercies over them.
The first thing they did when they landed on the promised land was to humble themselves before the Lord and thank Him for his tender mercies.
If we are obedient and humble before the Lord, given to much prayer, He will guide us in our lives, He will be our light, just like the stones.
Ether Prophesied great and marvelous things, he foresaw the days of Christ and the latter day New Jerusalem.
Ether 12:5
And it came to pass that Ether did prophesy great and marvelous things unto the people, which they did not believe, because they saw them not.
Ether 13:2
For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things, from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had receded from off the face of this land it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof;
Ether 13:4
Behold, Ether saw the days of Christ, and he spake concerning a New Jerusalem upon this land.
Ether 12:5-6
And it came to pass that Ether did prophesy great and marvelous things unto the people, which they did not believe, because they saw them not.
And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.
The people did not believe because they wanted evidence before believing in Christ and His power.
Jesus gives us hope.
Ether 12:4
Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God.
Ether 12:23
23 And I said unto him: Lord, the Gentiles will mock at these things, because of our weakness in writing; for Lord thou hast made us mighty in word by faith, but thou hast not made us mighty in writing; for thou hast made all this people that they could speak much, because of the Holy Ghost which thou hast given them;.
Jesus Christ helps us recognize our weaknesses and makes us strong even if he doesn't remove them.
