This morning I woke up early, it was about 6:30 and when I looked at my cell phone to find out what time it was I noticed that my friend Julie Peña had called me at 6:15. I knew at that time that the only reason she would be calling me that early was to tell me that our friend Elizabeth Sanabria had passed away. I called her right away and sure enough Elizabeth had passed away early that morning. She battled breast cancer and had developed tumors in her brain and chest. She suffered a lot. When I looked at her pictures on Facebook last month I knew she did not look good and she was getting close to dying. It reminded me of when I saw my mom and I knew she would soon die.
I will never forget the day I met Julie and Elizabeth. I had gone to a Latin dance at BYU,October 1987, and as I was standing in line to buy the ticket, I heard the two girls in front of me on the line, speaking Spanish. It was Puertorrican Spanish. I asked them where they were from and they told me they were from Puerto Rico. We became instant friends and went everywhere together. I spent most days at their apartment with Ashley. They loved Ashley. Because of them I met Brent. They lived in The Glenwood and they knew Brent's roommate and that is how I met Brent. She was only 42 years old and left behind a husband and a 19 year old daughter and a 17 year old son. I know that she is resting from all her suffering. She will be missed.
